Do you believe that energy drinks give you a boost? That's what all of the sales pitch is claiming. When you really think about it, how much sense does it make for people to continue to keep drinking all this sugar? This is the same reason why their are so many people overweight in the first place.

Example

5 Hour Energy Drink

4 Calories
0 grams sugars
The caffeine count not provided

Their Claim
That the 2 ounce shot takes just a couple of seconds to drink, and you will quickly feel bright and alert. They claim that the feeling will last for hours?

The Truth
It will give you a boost. Mainly because the caffeine is about the same that is in a cup of coffee. The company says that since it's product doesn't contain sugar, you won't go through the crash effect that comes from hours of drinking the sweet stuff. That is true, but couldn't you just grab a cup of unsweetened coffee for the same effect?

Safety
Drinking one bottle shouldn't be a problem for the average coffee lover. If you have too much it could lead to restlessness, headaches, and a increase in blood pressure.

Example

Starbucks Double Shot Energy

210 Calories
26 grams sugar
146 mg caffeine

The Claim
Ginseng, guarana, and vitamin B and milk protein. With a splash of coffee. The extra charge will keep you alert and full of energy.

The Truth
Most energy drinks talk about their herbal supplements. The science behind the add- ins are suspect at best. Ginseng for example won't give you a boost, but it will boost your brain power. Researchers have found that people that swallowed 200mg of the extract an hour before taking a test scored higher than they would if they had skipped the supplement.

Safety
Test show that Ginseng does interact with some medications. Scientist also concluded that guarana found in most energy drinks isn't large enough to cause any adverse side effects. However, their is still a question as to the safety of drinking a few cans of the stuff in a brief time span.

The conclusion is that these drinks can help fuel your workouts, but a person should not be dependent on them so much. Does drinking these types of drinks help fuel your workouts?
