It's always very important that you stretch your leg muscles before and after you exercise. You will be able to tell when you get a leg cramp because your legs will begin to hurt and contract by themselves. Most of the time leg cramps usually don't last that long, maybe a couple of minutes or so.
You can have some cramps that last over 10 minutes! If you ever get a severe leg cramp drink a cup of pickle juice. I can tell you that you probably won't like the taste of it, but it works and does wonders for those pesky little leg cramps. Not only does having leg cramps cause you a lot of pain, but it can greatly effect your workouts or just keep you from working out period!
Most people who get cramps rather frequently tend to over due it during their workouts. To combat this always go at your own pace and increase your workouts slowly week by week.
Some of the things that can cause you leg cramps
- Being overweight
- Overworked muscles
- Not getting enough fluids
- Medications that you may be taking
- Anemic
It is very important that you keep your body well hydrated. This is the number on reason that people tend to get these cramps over and over again. It's good to stock up on good sports drinks like Gatorade or Poweraid. To replace all of those electrolytes that you have lost through exercise.
What do I do when I have an acute leg cramps?
You will defiantly want to immediately stop the exercise that you were doing. Try to slowly stretch the area where the cramp is and massage the particular area until your muscle stops contracting.
This usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. It's also good to soak your legs in water with Epsom salt, this will help aid muscle recovery and relaxes your muscles.
One reason that is often overlooked about getting leg cramps
Stress!
If you are about to workout make sure that your mind is free of stress. When you are stressed out this tends to make your muscles tense and more prone to developing cramps. That's why it is so important to stretch before you workout, believe it or not doing this usually eliminates a lot of stress before you get started with your workouts.
So don't let leg cramps affect your workouts. Take all the necessary precautions so you can have a drama free workout experience!
